Trash Collection

Refuse is collected once a week. Please see map for your designated collection day.

Put your trash cart close to the curb the night before or by 7 a.m. on your designated day.

Return the cart to your normal storage area by the residence within 24 hours after collection.

Face the cart toward the street with the lid fully closed – handle, lid hinge, and wheels toward the residence.

Leave at least 4’ of space between carts and also from other obstacles that could interfere with automated collection such as mailboxes, parked cars, trees and shrubs.

Recycling Collection

Recycling is now available! Please use the same etiquette with recycle carts as with trash carts. Please determine your recyclable pick-up day by reviewing the recycle map below.  Recyclables will be collected every other week on Thursdays. Our current recycling center will remain open to accommodate recycling overages, recyclables too large to fit into cart, etc.

Hillsboro’s Recycling Center is located in the 100 block of North Birch (under the small water tower, west of the The Lumberyard). The gates of the Hillsboro Recycle Center will remain open 24/7. Hazardous waste (eg. batteries, CFLs, paint, solvents, and pesticides) is no longer accepted at the Hillsboro Recycle Center. Contact Marion County Household Hazardous Waste (620-382-3190).

Bulky Item Pick-up

Bulky item pick-up will be the last Friday of each month with the exception of November. Because of the Thanksgiving holiday, we will not collect bulky items in November. However, we will collect twice the following month, (the first and last Friday in December).

Bulky items are things that do not fit in your trash cart, such as chairs, couches, mattresses, dressers, TV’s, rolls of carpet and other furniture items. Set bulky items adjacent to the curb away from objects such as trees, mailboxes, etc.

Please do not set out items more than 2 days prior to collection day.

If you have a bulky item pick-up, please call City Hall to get your address on the list. Cost to dispose of bulky items is $10/item, payable at City Hall.

Clean-Up Week

The annual City-wide Clean-up for the City of Hillsboro is held in the spring. These days are set aside for residents of Hillsboro to dispose of extra trash and small limbs at no extra charge. Items will be collected curbside ONCE on the same day as your trash is collected. Do NOT place trash and bulky items next to the trash cart – leave a 5’ separation.

Your trash must be bagged, boxed or bundled or it will not be picked up.

  • Branches and trash need to be separated and in different piles.
  • Concrete will not be picked up. Please call City Hall if you need to dispose of concrete.
  • Hazardous materials will not be picked up. Paint, batteries, vehicle oil and other household hazardous material can be disposed of at the Marion County Household Hazardous Waste Facility.

  • Woody shrubs and tree branches may be disposed of at the City tree dump, located at 210th and Indigo. The site is open every day. Branches and small tree limbs left on the curb for pick up will be loaded with heavy equipment from the street. Do not stack next to mailboxes, electric poles, gas or water meters, trees or other landscaping. Bundle and tie small branches and limbs for easy pick up.
  • Leaves and grass clippings will not be picked up. Please use the City’s compost facility that is open every day. The location for the compost facility is at East Orchard Drive, just south of Midway Motors. Look for the directional signage.
